Virology: Training Opportunities

Dengue virus diagnostics Overview studies (HAI, ELISA, neuts, virus isolation and characterization). This could be for a few days or even longer depending on the interest and funding.

Local hospitals training. A most rewarding experience is visiting Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health which is a WHO Collaborating Center with the world's experts on managing dengue. They have an entire ward dedicated to caring for dengue afflicted children. We will begin a DHF project at this hospital some time in July, August or September. This too would give another research perspective.

Kamphaeng Phet field station (northern Thailand): Depending on when they would be coming out, training here could either entail seeing the countryside (environment) which is dengue country and understanding the foundational work done there over the past 20 years. If the timing is right, they could participate in the first blood draw of a 2000 child cohort study that will begin some time in July or August (depending on the IRBs).

WARUN field station (Kathmandu Nepal): Site of the Hepatitis E vaccine efficacy trial involving 2000 Royal Nepalese Army troops. A visit there would give perspectives on what is needed to implement vaccine studies given the regulatory demands from the U.S. FDA. We are exploring other epidemiological studies out there. Projected for late 2003.

Post Docs who are more focused in their goals and would like to review unpublished data and begin a manuscript out here, that may be possible, but would limit the extent of the overall exposure that they would get.

Two dengue vaccine studies will be launched between July and December. That would be a great opportunity for training.
